"Topping trees" is a practice used by some that involves cutting the branches back to 'stubs.' Many do not understand the long-term damage this can do to a tree's overall life. Let me take a minute to educate on the harm 'tree topping' can do:
1) Starvation: Removing 50%-100% of the leaf bearing limbs reduces the tree's ability to generate energy.
2) Weak Regrowth: In response to the sudden removal of limbs, the tree 'stresses' and sends out new weak limbs called 'sprouts.' These limbs grow rapidly and have weak attachments. Over time, they snap off easily in storms and wind.
3) Disease and Rot: Trees are unable to heal from the large flat cuts. This results in decay and the ability for insects and fungi to enter the stubs and cause the wood to rot from the inside out.
4) Sunburn: Cutting off all the tree's leaves removes all shade from the main trunk. The direct sun and heat can cause the bark to split and cause cankers on the tree.
